Why do dentists insist on using those repulsive “before” photos?Posted by Korey Korfiatis in Untagged |

Disgusting....
There are three main reasons patients seek out dental care:
1. Relieve pain. 2. Preventive care. 3. Cosmetic enhancement.
So, if I am a patient researching a dentist in order to relieve dental discomfort, a close up of decaying teeth brings to mind the physical/financial pain I will have to endure to achieve the “after” appearance.
Second, if I am looking for a dentist to help me prevent decay, why do I want to see pictures of patients with unhealthy mouths? Does that mean the dentist was unable to provide effective preventive care?
Lastly, consumers make decisions about luxury purchases based on emotion. Cosmetic dentistry is a luxury. Simply put, you want to sell the outcome. “After“ pictures stir up positive emotions, “before” pictures… not so much.
One thing marketers agree on is that humans make purchasing decisions based first and foremost on emotion. Consumers pick products by how they make them feel. Dentistry, especially cosmetic, is no different.
So, to all you dentists out there, do us all a favor and save your close up “before” shots for your study club round tables. Just show us the result of your amazing technical skills with full-face photos of your beautifully designed smiles.
